Are you aware of the risks of using a pirated device?

“The TV Operator just attracted one more customer. From now on, this family opened their door to hackers specialized in stealing data. Through the pirate device that is just installed in their house the hackers can connect to their network and access their bank account and transfer the money to foreign countries.” Says a video recently broadcast by many Brazilian TV channels and produced by the Brazilian Association of Pay TV ( ABTA).

The video explores with irony the false sense of advantage that a user has when choosing to purchase a pirate device.

In addition to legal consequences, users of pirated or counterfeit software could experience:

  • Exposure to software viruses or defective software
  • Inadequate or no product documentation
  • No warranties
  • Lack of technical support
  • Ineligibility for software upgrades offered to properly licensed users
  • Malware infection
  • Privacy or Confidentiality violations
  • Data/Information leakage

Each country has specific laws to punish intellectual property infringements and copyrights violations. In USA for example the Copyright Law states the following:

U.S. Copyright Law {Title 17 U.S.C. Section 101 et seq., Title 18 U.S.C. Section 2319}

Copyright infringements can be punishable by up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines. Repeat offenders can be imprisoned for up to 10 years. Violators can also be held civilly liable for actual damages, lost profits, or statutory damages up to $150,000 per work.
